There are more than five million people living in Singapore today, population density growth shows no sign of slowing and we have all but abandoned the dream of a pretty, detached house surrounded by lush green gardens. Most of us do not have access to our own rural idyll so must make do with the pockets of greenery that can be found littered across concrete jungles the world over. Luckily, these tiny oases are multiplying.

Inspired by projects such as The High Line in New York City, architects, gardeners and urban planners are transforming the most overlooked and underused part of any building - the roof. With a little thought and innovation it is possible to transform a roof into a space of relaxation, entertainment and play.
